Explores the use of the words pistis and pisteuein as faith terminology by Josephus. This is the first major study of the pist- word group in the writings of Josephus. The first part of the book examines the development of a religious understanding of the Greek word group. Special emphasis is given to the religious use of the pist- words in Classical and Hellenistic Greek, in the Septuagint, in Sirach and in Philo. The second and main part of the book deals specifically with the use of the word group - both secular and religious - by Josephus. His use of this faith terminology is compared with that of the New Testament. This section includes a critical look at the thesis that 'faith' in the New Testament is primarily a Hellenistic concept.

This study examines love in John's Gospel. It attempts to answer the question in what way love in the Johannine Gospel receives its narratively-imaginative stature. John's Gospel develops a love story which is different from any other narrative. Much attention is given to the cultural contextualisation as well as to the narrative and imaginative textualisations of the various love relationships. In this, Jesus' relationship with his beloved disciple plays a central role. The study concludes that all other love relationships - the relationship of Jesus with his father, mother, brothers and sisters, with John the Baptist, with Peter and the other disciples, with particular women and men - derive their colour and content from this specific relationship.

The Buyid wazir Abū I-Faḍl Ibn al-'Amīd (died 970 A.D.) became famous as a poet and expert in epistolary literature ( inšą' ), but also as a scholar and scientist. Until now our only source of information was from fragments and quotations in later literature. Fortunately, two Arabic manuscripts from the 12th and 13th centuries have been preserved containing seven letters which were sent to the Buyid emir 'Aḍudaddaula, and confirming posterity's high opinion of him. Moreover, they reveal the originality of a personality which, based on the knowledge of Greek and contemporary sciences, drew new conclusions. The text of the letters is published here together with translations into German, commentary and complete glossary. In a deliberate and complicated style they discuss themes of meteorology, physics, psychology and philosophy. These letters are extremely important for the history of Arabic literature and the history of sciences.
